Modern
Prelude & Minuet
for Solo Piano
TBD
Program Notes
"Modern Prelude & Minuet" is the second solo piano work that Mena has composed and notated. Between the year of 2013 when she composed her first piece and the year 2017 when she started taking private lessons from University of Miami professor Dr. Shawn Crouch many of her earlier works were lost due to the misplacement of a multitude of notebooks. When Mena received the notation software, Sibelius, it marked a milestone in her newly blossoming interest in composing as well as showed her parents how serious she was about making composing a career. "Modern Prelude & Minuet", along with a couple of chamber ensemble works that were composed prior, became Mena's first collection of compositions that were notated and stored away safely.
When she was composing this work, Mena took inspiration from pieces from the Baroque era. Mainly CPE Bach's "Solfggietto in c minor," as one can clearly tell from the prelude. And other pieces from his father, JS Bach, such as his "Minuet in g minor BWV Anh115" as well as the "Gigue" from his Partita in B-flat Major BWV 825. "Modern Prelude & Minuet" was composed in 2020 during the height of the Covid Pandemic, and became the start of a collection of solo piano works under the title The Modern Suite. Since the creation of "Modern Prelude & Minuet" two other pieces have been added to the Suite's collection. "Modern Barcarolle" was composed a couple months after, and "Modern Sonata" was written during Mena's first year of undergrad at the University of Redlands Conservatory of Music.
Because "Modern Prelude & Minuet" was composed during the height of the Pandemic. This performance will be its premiere, which will be an exciting moment for the composer. Especially since when she first wrote this piece she never thought she'd hear it played live.
